Is your period normal? What even is “normal” when it comes to periods?

Let’s talk periods! We can all agree that our time of the month is not the most enjoyable experience.

From cramps and uncomfortable bloating to trips to the bathroom to change your tampon, your period can really put a damper on things. Everyone’s period is different which makes it difficult to tell when you might be experiencing abnormal period symptoms.

Instead of wondering if your period is normal or abnormal, ask yourself one question:
Is your period disrupting your life?

  • Are you lying in bed all day with debilitating cramps?
  • Are you skipping your workouts due to fatigue or pain during your period?
  • Do you avoid wearing certain clothing items due to extreme bloating or concerns of leaking?
  • Have you cancelled plans due to your period symptoms?
  • Have you missed work or school because of your period symptoms?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, talk to your doctor.

It could be a sign of uterine health conditions like abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) or uterine fibroids — and you may have options. To help you prepare for your next visit, check out this discussion guide to help you talk to your doctor about your symptoms and ask what options might be available to you.
