The NovaSure procedure, step-by-step
Before starting the procedure, your doctor will issue a pregnancy test to ensure you’re not pregnant.
1. Insertion
The cervix is dilated and a slender wand is inserted, extending a triangular- shaped netting.
2. Placement
The netting is extended to fit the size and shape of the uterus.
3. Ablation
Heat is delivered through the netting for about 90 seconds, ablating the lining of the uterus.
4. Removal
The netting is pulled back into the wand and removed from the uterus.
A hysterectomy was not an option for me. The NovaSure procedure replaced that. It was simple and easy, and it’s done!

Is the NovaSure procedure right for me?
If you have heavy or long-lasting periods and you don’t want to become pregnant in the future, you may be a great candidate for the NovaSure procedure. Talk to your doctor about your heavy periods to determine the best treatment for you. Your doctor will need to rule out any serious causes of heavy menstrual bleeding, like cancer or a pelvic inflammatory infection.
Can I still become pregnant after the NovaSure procedure?
The NovaSure procedure does not prevent pregnancy and pregnancy after an endometrial ablation procedure is very dangerous for both the mother and the fetus. Before having a NovaSure procedure, you should consult your doctor about using a form of contraception that works for your lifestyle.
What can I expect after the NovaSure procedure?
You may experience cramping and mild pain, discharge and in some cases nausea and vomiting. Symptoms are typically mild and most subside within a day. Most women resume their normal activities by the next day.
It is normal to experience a watery or bloody discharge after the NovaSure procedure. It could last for a day or a couple of weeks, even up to two months post procedure. It may come and go, increasing based on certain activities. It may take about three months for your cycle to become consistent.
Be sure to follow all instructions provided to you after the procedure. If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor.
- A fever higher than 100.4°
- Worsening pelvic pain that is not relieved by ibuprofen or other prescribed medicine
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Shortness of breath or dizziness
- Bowel or bladder problems
- A greenish vaginal discharge (reddish, yellowish or brownish is normal)
What are the risks?
As with any procedure, your physician will explain the benefits, risks and alternatives prior to performing the NovaSure procedure. Risks associated with the NovaSure procedure are rare, but may include
- Thermal injury
- Uterine perforation
- Infections
You should let your physician know if you have a cardiac pacemaker or any other electrical device in your body before undergoing the NovaSure procedure.

Yes! NovaSure is clinically proven to reduce or eliminate disruptive periods without hormones. NovaSure endometrial ablation is not a sterilization procedure. Rare but serious risks include, but are not limited to, thermal injury, perforation and infection.
